South Korea is experiencing a significant decrease in barley production, with a 28% drop from the previous year, reaching an all-time low of 70,891 tons. This decline is largely due to abnormal climate conditions during the growing season, including frequent rains, lack of sunlight, and pests and diseases. The reduction in production has led to a decrease in the self-sufficiency rate and has been exacerbated by a decrease in cultivation area. Additionally, barley farmers are facing challenges with red mold disease, which is not covered by crop disaster insurance. The government plans to expand the area eligible for subscription to crop disaster insurance nationwide starting October, but farmers in some major producing areas will not be able to receive insurance benefits. The National Agricultural Cooperative Barley Association has stressed the need for improvements in insurance and other measures to reduce barley farmers' losses and increase production.
