Germany and Czechia are experiencing significant hop harvest shortfalls due to extreme weather conditions, with Germany, the world's second-largest hop producer, expecting an 18% drop from average yields and a 20.4% decrease from the previous year. The heatwaves and drought have particularly impacted early-maturing varieties, leading to severe reductions in production. While hop yields in Slovenia and Poland are expected to rise slightly, the shortages are expected to affect brewers in the UK, where hop cultivation is not on the same scale as in Germany. The Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) in the UK is calling for government action to address the challenges facing the industry, including high energy bills and proposed changes to the Alcohol Duty System.
