Global purchases of imported pork cost a total US$32 billion in 2019. Overall, the value of pork imports increased by 28.8% for all importing countries since 2015 when international purchases of pork were valued at $24.8 billion. Year over year, worldwide imported pork appreciated by 12.3% from 2018 to 2019. From a continental perspective, European countries accounted for the highest dollar worth of imported pork during 2019 with purchases valued at $14.7 billion or 46% of the global total. In second place were Asian importers at 38.4% while 9.4% of overall international pork purchased was delivered to North America. Smaller percentages were bought by customers in Latin America (3.2%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, Oceania (2.3%) led by Australia and New Zealand, and Africa (0.7%).
