Portugal has seen a outbreak of the bluetongue virus, specifically serotype 3, on three sheep farms in Torre de Coelheiros, Évora Region. The disease has also raised clinical suspicions in other farms. The affected animals showed symptoms and led to several deaths. Authorities have sent samples for sequencing to the European Reference Laboratory in Algete to determine the virus's origin. The disease has severe symptoms in sheep and can also affect cattle, leading to high mortality rates and milk production losses. Since October 2023, the virus has spread across Europe, reaching Portugal, and Spain has temporarily halted the movement of susceptible animals from Portugal to Spain. The Spanish Ministry is coordinating with vaccine laboratories to create an emergency vaccine bank against this serotype.
