Portugal is emerging as a leading country in olive cultivation and olive oil production, driven by its geographical advantages, stable economy, and large olive-cultivated area. With 361,483 hectares, it ranks ninth globally, covering 3% of the world's olive grove area. The country's efficiency in olive cultivation, including rainfed and irrigated systems, and a diverse range of olive varieties, contributes to its success. Portugal produces 135,000 tons of olive oil per year, accounting for 7% of global production, with a significant portion exported to Brazil and Spain. The modernization of the sector in the last decade has doubled production while maintaining the same cultivated area, leading to lower production costs, increased exports, and economic growth. The olive oil industry in Portugal generates an annual business volume of approximately 470 million euros and employs around 6.6 million working days.
