The North-West European Potato Producers Group (NEPG), which includes France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium, is worried about potential increases in potato acreage between 2024 and 2025 despite a recent price rise from 12.5 to 30 euros per 100 kilos. The 2024 harvest increased by 6.9% from 2023, reaching 24.7 million tonnes, but challenges such as rising production costs, falling yields, and growing international competition in the French fry market from countries like India, China, and Turkey, as well as potential U.S. policy changes, create uncertainty. Climate change, regulatory issues, soil problems, and diseases add to the technical and financial risks of potato farming. NEPG advises farmers to align production with demand to mitigate these risks.
