Indonesia is embarking on a major agricultural project led by Minister of Agriculture, Andi Amran Sulaiman, aimed at achieving self-sufficiency in sugar production and reducing import dependency. The initiative focuses on the development of a 500,000-hectare sugar cane plantation coupled with a large-scale sugar factory in Merauke Regency, South Papua Province. This project, which is under the direct supervision of President Joko Widodo, is expected to fulfill the domestic sugar demand, enhance farmers' welfare, and conserve foreign exchange. It represents a critical move towards modernizing agriculture and ensuring food security in the country.
