At the XV International Microfinance Congress in Paita, Peruvian authorities, led by César Quispe, Vice Minister of Mype and Industry, emphasized the absence of illegal fishing by foreign vessels in Peruvian waters, assuring strict oversight and no proof of illegal activities. Despite these reassurances, local fishermen and Sonapescal representatives raise concerns over the unregulated entry of Chinese vessels, lacking satellite monitoring systems, which could lead to potential infractions. The Peruvian government is grappling with the significant decline in squid populations, sparking criticism for inadequate scientific research and support for artisanal fishermen. There are calls for more comprehensive studies and an audit of the Centers for Productive Innovation and Technology Transfer (CITE) to address these issues and ensure the sustainability and competitiveness of Peru's artisanal fishing sector.
