The effectiveness of lowering blood pressure has been confirmed in the subtropical fish species, the black porgy (pictured). The research team from the Material Development Laboratory at the National Marine Biodiversity Institute (Dr. Lee Hyo-geun) announced on the 9th that they have confirmed the blood pressure-lowering effect of black porgy extract. Due to climate change, the proportion of subtropical fish species in the catch from Jeju coastal waters has reached 38%. The black porgy is a representative subtropical fish species that inhabits the southern seas and Jeju coastal waters. The research team has demonstrated that black porgy extract has a blood pressure-lowering effect similar to that of nifedipine, a drug used to treat high blood pressure. They also confirmed the potential for its use as a raw material in the health functional food industry. The Marine Biodiversity Institute is currently in the process of filing a related patent.
