An expedition of Siberian scientists, supported by the Project Office for the Development of the Arctic, successfully selected a new portion of Putorana char caviar for captive breeding at Sobachye Lake in Taimyr, as part of a unique aquaculture project. The goal is to diversify the genetic material of the breeding stock and eventually establish a full-fledged replacement broodstock in 5-7 years. This initiative aims to commercially produce fish with unique nutritional properties, including a record content of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) from Arctic char, which are beneficial for cardiovascular and nervous system health. The project receives financial support from the Project Office for the Development of the Arctic and involves collaboration with various institutions to understand the reasons for the record PUFA content in the char and to develop optimal methods for their maintenance in aquaculture.
