A new aquaculture model in Quang Tri, Vietnam, is aiming to stabilize and sustain sand-based shrimp farming by introducing snail rearing. The model, which is supported by the Quang Tri Agricultural Extension Center, has seen success with a household raising 600,000 snails, achieving over 70% survival rate and high product value. The snails are initially reared in tanks for easier management before being transferred to grow-out ponds. The model also includes a system for treating wastewater from snail farming, which is used to raise mullet. Despite the initial high investment cost and the need for a consistent food source, the model offers a simple, sustainable, and environmentally friendly way to farm, without using chemicals or antibiotics.
