A research project in Brazil has recorded a rare reproductive aggregation of groupers in São Francisco do Sul, Santa Catarina, with 38 specimens of the critically endangered Brazil Dusky Grouper. This is the second largest shoal recorded by the project since 2002. The species has experienced a significant population decline due to habitat destruction, overfishing, and pollution. The project aims to conserve the grouper and marine ecosystems across nine states along the Brazilian coast. The data obtained from monitoring the groupers' movement patterns and use of breeding areas is crucial for their conservation.
