Indonesia is grappling with a sugar production deficit, producing only 2.4 million tons against a domestic consumption need of 7 million tons. To combat this, the government has introduced Presidential Regulation Number 40 of 2023 to expedite national sugar self-sufficiency and bioethanol provision for biofuel. Additionally, the Ministry of Trade has developed a roadmap to boost sugar cane productivity, yield, and cultivation area expansion. The initiatives aim to increase domestic sugar production and decrease reliance on imports.
