In 2022, Japan's seafood imports from Russia reached a high of 124,437 tons, valued at 140.2 billion yen, with significant imports of snow crab and pollock roe. However, the United States imposed a ban on Russian seafood imports in March 2022, leading to a decrease in Russian crab imports and an opportunity for Canada. Despite this, Canadian snow crab exports to the US saw only a 7% growth in the first quarter of 2023 due to inflation. After the US ban, Japan and South Korea increased their purchases of Russian seafood, taking advantage of the lower prices, but Japan's politicians are being urged to buy Canadian snow crab instead.
