A team from the National Horticultural Research Institute (NIHORT), led by Dr Idris Bala Gingiyu, visited watermelon farms in Bara, Kirfi Local Government Area of Bauchi, in response to a distressing report on the challenges faced by local farmers. These challenges, which have persisted for over two years, include diseases, pests, poor seed and chemical quality, leading to significant yield reductions and impoverishment among farmers. The visit aimed to collect samples, analyze the problems, and work towards solutions, with preliminary findings pointing towards the need for using quality seeds and chemicals. The community, having sought divine intervention for their plight, welcomed the team's efforts with the hope of finding a lasting solution to the issues plaguing watermelon farming in the region.
