[Korean Farmers' News Reporter Kim Young-min] With climate change increasing damage from diseases and pests, the development of resistant rice varieties is progressing rapidly. In this context, a rice variety with strong resistance to rice blast disease is expected to be distributed to farms starting next year. According to the National Institute of Crop Science, the affected area of rice blast disease increased sharply in 2023 and 2024. Specifically, the area affected by rice blast disease increased from 1,468 ha in 2021 to 5,279 ha in 2023, and damage was reported in 4,104 ha in 2024. Rice blast disease is caused by a bacterium that parasitizes rice, causing the leaves to wither and turn white in a wave pattern.
