The fishing season for smelt and char in the East Sakhalin subzone and the South Kuril zone is set to commence in mid-April and conclude on November 30, while in Western Sakhalin, North Sea of Okhotsk and Primorye subzones, it will start from May 1. To protect smelt stocks from industrial fishing, fishing is only allowed 500 m on both sides of the river mouth and the same distance into the sea or bay during the spawning run. The total production volumes for these fish species have been set, with the East Sakhalin subzone allocated the largest resource of 977 tons. A third of the smelt resources are reserved for fishing in areas adjacent to the Aleksandrovsk-Sakhalinsky region.
