Indonesia's heavy reliance on garlic imports, primarily from China, has led to significant price increases due to a 7.21% decrease in import volume from January to April 2024, despite a 33.51% rise in import value. Garlic prices have surged to IDR 45,000 per kg, with regional disparities such as North Maluku seeing prices as high as IDR 67,500 per kg. The slow import realization, attributed to new importers, has prompted the Presidential Staff Office (KSP) to summon importers for discussions, a move criticized by importers like Jaya who argue that the Ministry of Trade should handle such matters. Jaya and other importers were also summoned by Bareskrim Polri due to the rising garlic prices.
