Indonesia's vanilla production, a key export earning foreign exchange for the country, is facing challenges such as fungal attacks and lack of government attention. The disease has decreased productivity by 30-80%. Despite these challenges, the Ministry of Trade is optimistic about the potential of vanilla, which is grown by smallholders across 25 provinces. In 2021, the national production could reach 400 metric tons of dry vanilla. The Indonesian Vanilla Council and the Gamal Institute have formed Vanili Indonesia, a non-profit organization, to support vanilla farmers and establish a transparent, digital-based system.
