Italian rice production chains Coldiretti and Filiera Italia have opposed the proposed recognition of Basmati PGI by Pakistan, warning it could lead to the exemption of duties on imported Basmati rice, negatively impacting the Italian market and their national production chain. They fear a collapse in the valorization of European Indica type rice and the abandonment of long B cultivation, leading to a surge in Japonica rice production and a drop in prices. They also conveyed concerns over Pakistan's guarantee of social and environmental sustainability in rice production, citing issues like child labor and use of banned pesticides. The organizations have requested Minister Lollobrigida to oppose the application and to advocate for this position among other EU states.
