Malaysia's Agriculture and Food Security Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, has announced a decrease in the price of imported white rice due to a shortage caused by severe flood damage to paddy farming, alongside other agricultural sectors. The price reduction, effective from Sunday, comes as the international market sees a drop in rice prices, with the import price potentially rising to RM3,200-RM3,300 per tonne from the current RM2,800. This price reduction will not impact local farmers, who are currently producing about 56% of the market's rice, as the government targets 61% productivity. The floods have caused significant agricultural losses in Kelantan, with 4,800 hectares of agricultural land affected and initial losses estimated at RM16 million, with further assessment expected to increase this figure. The government plans to provide compensation to paddy farmers, and Bernas has already reduced the warehouse gate price of imported white rice in Peninsular Malaysia from RM3,000 to RM2,800 per tonne.
