Over the past decade, Romania has emerged as the leading supplier of sunseed among EU countries, satisfying stable demand and also supplying to Turkey, though exports to Turkey fluctuate based on domestic production and import policies. Approximately 80% of Romania's sunseed oilseed solvent (SFS) production is exported to the EU. The absence of sunseed imports from Russia, previously a major supplier, and new European Commission production estimates for Romania in 2024/25 reducing its production by 1.1 M mt, have made the stable production and export of SFS from Romania more crucial. The country now faces challenges such as import limitations for Ukrainian sunseed, with exports expected to drop by 60% in 2024/25, returning to 2009/10 levels.
