In November 2024, the Russian agricultural watchdog, Rosselkhoznadzor, intercepted 180 tons of 'sanctioned' Conference pears from Kazakhstan at the Mashtakovo phytosanitary control post, intending to be illegally imported to Russia. The pears, along with phytosanitary certificates from Kazakhstan's Ministry of Agriculture, were found to be loaded into damaged and re-marked wooden boxes with traces of previous foreign labels, specifically from Poland and Belgium. These findings have led to the seizure and destruction of the quarantined products at a landfill in the Orenburg region, with the incident reported to Kazakhstan for further investigation and potential discussions to address the violation.
