The coconut by-products industry in South India is facing significant losses due to the Covid-19 lockdown, with factories closed for over a month. This includes the production of tender coconut water, coconut oil, and desiccated coconut powder. The industry, which includes about 2500 units with a total investment of Rs 2000 crore, primarily in Kerala, is also struggling with competition from cheaper imports and a decrease in demand for coconut oil. The government is called upon to support the industry with loans and reduced GST rates to help them cut retail prices. The lockdown has also impacted the availability of raw materials and the market for these products.
