In 2023, Russia and the Faroe Islands reached an agreement on new fishing quotas despite their strained relations. Russian fishermen are permitted to catch 5.8 thousand tons of herring, 8.08 thousand tons of mackerel, and 75 thousand tons of blue whiting, with notable reductions in mackerel and herring quotas by 34.2% and 10.6%, respectively, compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, the Faroe Islands are allowed to catch 7.4 thousand tons of cod and 1 thousand tons of haddock in Russian waters, also experiencing a reduction. Quotas for flounder and shrimp remain unchanged.
