Five Russian poultry farms are conducting trials on the Russian Smena 9 crossbreed, following expectations of its high production potential and lower cost compared to imported crossbreeds. Previous trials, which were conducted under poor conditions, produced discouraging results, but scientists are making necessary amendments for the new trials. The Russian government has approved the construction of a breeding center focused on Smena 9, at a cost of 5 billion roubles, as part of Russia's 'anti-sanctions actions'. The poultry industry is aiming to be self-sufficient in hatching eggs, having imported 400 million fewer hatching eggs in 2022 due to avian influenza outbreaks in Europe, and is expected to further reduce imports in the current year.
