In the first eight months of 2020, Russia experienced a significant shift in its grapefruit import market, with a notable decrease in imports from China and a surge in imports from Vietnam. The total import volume fell by over 17%, and the value dropped by 18.5% compared to the same period in 2019, with the average import price per ton decreasing by 1.7%. The import ban from China, in effect since the crop year 2020, has led Russia to diversify its sources, including Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, and especially Vietnam. The import volume from China fell by 63.4%, while Vietnam's exports to Russia increased drastically, reaching a value nearly 356% higher than in 2019. This change highlights Russia's growing demand for tropical fruits, such as grapefruits (pomelos), given its cold climate and limited arable land, and underscores the opportunity for countries like Vietnam to increase their exports to the Russian market.
