Russian farmers have significantly increased the cultivation area for chickpeas and lentils, reaching a total of 1.57 million hectares, a rise of 610 thousand hectares from the previous record. This expansion is primarily due to good market conditions, including high prices for lentils and chickpeas, which are in greater demand than peas. The primary markets for these crops are countries in South Asia. The harvest for 2023 was 345 thousand tons for lentils and 702.8 thousand tons for chickpeas, and exports have seen a substantial increase. The Agroexport center believes there is potential for further growth in both production and export of these crops. EkoNiva Group, a major supplier of lentils, has been contributing to this growth since 2016.
