A recent announcement on the IOR-PIB website in Poznań has revealed the discovery of the wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia, in cereal crops, a pest originally from southwestern Asia that has become a global concern for wheat and barley crops. This aphid, which causes significant losses as a vector of the barley yellow dwarf virus and other viruses, is notable for its ability to cause plant growth cessation and grain quality deterioration through feeding. Additionally, the finding underscores the growing threat of aphids, emphasizing the importance of inspecting plantations for potential viral threats and implementing preventative and emergency chemical treatment measures, especially with the detection of new species like the wheat aphid.
