In response to the upcoming European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) set to take effect in December 2024, Rwanda's National Agricultural Export Development Board (NAEB) has joined forces with JDE Peet’s and Enveritas. This partnership aims to ensure that Rwandan coffee continues to be accessible to European markets by preventing exports from lands deforested after 2020. Through the use of advanced technologies such as high-resolution satellite imagery and machine learning, along with on-the-ground verification, the collaboration seeks to protect local forests and the livelihoods of nearly 400,000 smallholder coffee farmers in Rwanda. JDE Peet’s has also committed to restoring any land that was deforested for coffee farming, promoting responsible cultivation practices and safeguarding the incomes of farmers.
