Sader establishes National Vanilla Day in Mexico

2000Agro/Redacción The Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) declared December 16 of each year as the National Day of Vanilla, an orchid endemic to Mexico, which represents a cultural legacy and its production is widely accepted throughout the world. The federal agency published this Tuesday, in the Official Journal of the Federation (DOF), the decree that aims to promote among the population the participation in activities organized by the National Committee of the Vanilla Product System and the civil and academic associations linked to the production chain, in addition to highlighting the natural and cultural wealth of Mexico. For almost 300 years, Mexico was the only producer of vanilla in the world, an orchid that is known by the Totonacs as Xahanat, which means black flower and has been a fundamental part of the national identity for centuries.
