Bulgaria: Saffron – a crop with many possibilities

Saffron is a crop that is gaining popularity in the country, and for nearly 5 years a group of saffron producers have gathered in the Association of Saffron Producers in Bulgaria. "Our goal is to help each other, to upgrade and improve the business environment in the sector", the chairman of the association, Antonio Bonev, told Agri.bg. He explained that the production of saffron in Bulgaria is still boutique, but the Bulgarian "red gold" has exceptional qualities - something that has also been proven in laboratory tests. Iran is the largest producer, exporting 90% of the spice globally. Fields with saffron crocus are already in Bulgaria. It turns out that in our country there are suitable conditions for its cultivation. "It can be grown practically in all parts of the country, but it is more complicated at an altitude of over 1,500 m," explained Bonev.
