A forum in Mexico in July 2024 brought together the European Union, the Cancun hotel initiative ‘The Seas We Love’, and the Government of Quintana Roo to identify actions and international cooperation to turn the excess sargassum on the Mexican Caribbean coasts into a opportunity and decrease its negative impacts on biodiversity. The Kingdom of the Netherlands was identified as a key player in sargassum collection and valorization due to its traditional coastal management and marine engineering experience. The forum highlighted the potential of sargassum as a fishery resource and its integration into a circular economy framework, with the Mexican Institute for Research in Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture (IMIPAS) leading the government efforts to reclassify sargassum.
