Ukrainian scientists have developed new onion varieties with unusual shapes, which demonstrate significantly higher yields and better storage life compared to traditional samples. The developments belong to the Institute of Vegetable and Melon Growing of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine, according to the press service of NAAS. In recent years, experts from the institution have introduced several promising varieties of pointed onions to the market — Zagrava, Mayak, and Buran. As noted by the senior researcher at the Institute, Candidate of Economic Sciences, Viktoriya Rudy, according to the research results, these varieties exceeded the benchmark variety Harmoniya in total yield by 11–32%, and in marketable yield by 24–53%. In addition, their storage life is 95–96%, which is 8% higher than the baseline.
