The Scottish Pelagic Sustainability Group reports a 28.3% increase in the North Sea herring stock for 2024, according to the International Council for the Exploration of Sea's latest advice. This is due to a strong recruitment of juvenile fish, with the stock being above the Maximum Sustainable Yield level and fishing pressure being lower than the stated limit. The North Sea herring, the only herring fishery in the north-east Atlantic to hold the Marine Stewardship Council ecolabel for sustainable harvesting, has been certified since 2008 and is recognized for its sustainable practices by the UK.
