The National Seed Alliance warns that a new interpretation of the value-added tax (VAT) rate for seeding material could destabilize the Russian market and lead to significant losses for seed producers and sellers. The Supreme Court of Russia ruled that seeds treated with chemicals cannot be used for food, therefore, the preferential VAT rate of 10% should not apply. This decision has led to additional charges of VAT for seed companies, which could result in bankruptcies and the collapse of the distribution network.
