A partnership between the selection and genetic center 'SoyuzSemSvekla' and the Government of the Stavropol Territory aims to establish a seed-growing cluster to produce up to 50% of Russia's sugar beet seed needs. Owned by Rusagro holding and Shchelkovo Agrokhim, the center uses advanced technologies for breeding and genetic selection of sugar beet hybrids, with the goal of reducing Russia's reliance on imported seeds. The initiative is supported by a 2023 increase in domestic sugar beet seed provision to 2.5%, with plans to grow this to 12% in 2024. The project also includes restrictions on the import of sugar beet seeds, such as banning batches with quarantine objects and limiting the import of seed material and documents, to further promote the use of domestically produced seeds.
