Xiangshan County in Zhejiang Province, China, has made a breakthrough in the large-scale artificial breeding of small yellow croaker, a key marine economic fish. This comes as a result of seven years of research due to overfishing and the deterioration of the marine environment. The small yellow croaker is known for its stressfulness, making domestication challenging. However, a find of over 5,000 fry in 2014 marked the beginning of research to overcome these challenges. The number of fry has since grown to over 2 million in 2020, signaling a significant achievement in the industrialization of small yellow croaker. The species offers advantages such as a wide breeding range, short breeding cycle, marketability, and low breeding risk. The Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences has recognized the county's efforts and established the 'Xiangshan Yellow Croaker Scientific Research Cooperation Base' to strengthen scientific and technological cooperation. The development of small yellow croaker faces challenges like inadequate technical standards, but it is hoped that focusing on these areas will lead to the industry's growth.
