The Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority (SFPA) of Ireland has published its annual classification list for commercial shellfish production areas, assessing 136 classifications in 58 production areas. The list ensures compliance with strict safety requirements for human consumption under European and Irish Food laws. This year, twenty-one production areas were upgraded, and nine were downgraded. Ireland's shellfish industry, which is worth €68m and employs over 3,000 people, produced an estimated 31,800 tonnes of shellfish in 2023, with 85% exported primarily to European and Asian markets. The SFPA partners with the shellfish industry and other state agencies to maintain high food safety standards and preserve Ireland's reputation for quality seafood.
