Russia's traditional dairy product, smetana or yogurt-thick cream, is at risk of extinction due to potential EU sanctions targeting milk yeast, a crucial ingredient in its production. Sergey Bachin, owner of AgriVolga, highlighted that Russia depends heavily on imported yeast cultures, with no local bio-factories for production. Although the dairy market is not directly affected by sanctions, factories are sourcing alternatives from China and Turkey as they reduce imports from Europe. In 2022, Russia saw a slight increase in milk production by 0.9 percent, reaching 32.6 million tons, despite logistical and imported product supply issues.
