In the 2023/24 season, Ghana is facing a severe cocoa crisis, losing over a third of its production to smuggling due to low local prices, delayed payments, and an unstable currency. This has caused a significant economic impact, with production dropping to less than 55% of the average for previous seasons. Organized smuggling networks are transporting cocoa to neighboring countries like Togo, Burkina Faso, and Mali. Despite efforts by an anti-smuggling task force and the deployment of the military, the issue persists. Local farmers are deeply affected by payment delays from Cocobod. In response, Ghana has increased the price paid to producers by 45% and introduced a new financing model, though the effectiveness of these measures remains uncertain.
