Mai Son district in Son La, Vietnam, has shifted its agricultural focus from inefficient maize and cassava cultivation to planting fruit trees, such as dragon fruit and mango, on sloping land. This change has not only greened the hills but also significantly increased farmers' income. One example is Mrs. Do Thi Phuong, who switched 4,000m2 of land from inefficient maize and cassava to dragon fruit, generating over 200 million VND in profit last year. Similarly, Mr. Pham Van Duy's switch to longan cultivation has proven profitable. The district is encouraging the development of fruit trees, establishing cooperatives, and promoting linkages in production and consumption. With 10,800 hectares dedicated to fruit tree cultivation, the district has created a substantial number of jobs, leading to a stable income for local residents and a decrease in poverty rates.
