A plant disease, potato spindle tuber viroid (PTSVd), has been identified in tomato crops in the Tasman district, leading to the destruction of the affected plants. The source of the disease cannot be traced, and further sampling is being done from the external environment around the glasshouses. The Ministry for Primary Industries has confirmed that the virus was not found in imported tomato seed samples and is not a food safety issue. PSTSVd has been detected in various parts of the world since the 1990s and was first found in New Zealand in 2000.
