The international commission ICCAT has increased the bluefin tuna catch quota for the Spanish fishing fleet by 10% for 2023, rising to 6,784 tons. This is part of a larger increase in the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) from 36,000 tons in 2022 to 40,570 tons in 2023, distributed among European countries, including an increase for Spain. The TAC for bigeye and tropical tuna will remain the same, and a new measure will be implemented to reduce sea turtle by-catch in tuna fisheries. Additionally, the EU has proposed a retention ban to end overfishing of the overexploited shortfin mako in the South Atlantic, with catch limits for all parties based on past averages.
