In the past five years, Spain has seen a dramatic 145% increase in its pistachio cultivation area, expanding from 2,000 hectares to 78,495 hectares, largely due to the crop's profitability and drought resistance. This expansion has made Spain a significant player in the global pistachio market, with a projected growth in both production and domestic demand. Dryland cultivation is predominant, accounting for 43% of the cultivated area, while 21% is dedicated to intensive crops under both dryland and irrigated conditions. The pistachio sector in Spain has become a major economic driver, generating over 800 million euros in revenue and employing more than 200,000 people. The majority of the production (90%) is aimed for export markets, with Italy, the United States, and Germany being the primary destinations. This surge in pistachio cultivation in Spain signifies a promising future for the industry both domestically and internationally.
