Spain imports 65% of its watermelon from Morocco

65% of the watermelon that Spain imports comes from Moroccan exporters. A recent study by Hortoinfo reveals that the Spanish importation of watermelon reached a volume of 120.55 million kilos during the 2022/2023 campaign, recording a significant increase of 344.2% compared to ten previous campaigns, i.e. since the period 2013/2014. This data covers the period from September 1 to August 31 of each year. The total value of purchases of foreign watermelons by Spain during the 2022/2023 campaign amounts to 80.98 million euros, with an average price of 0.67 euros per kilo. This value represents a significant increase of 462.36% compared to the 2013/2014 campaign. Of all the watermelons imported by Spain during the last campaign, 65.34% came from Morocco, making Morocco the main supplier of watermelons to Spain, with a volume of 78.76 million kilos.
