In the first four months of 2024, Spain imported a record 13,653 tons of low-cost honey, with China slightly surpassing Portugal as the main supplier. Chinese honey was priced at €1.13/kg, compared to Portuguese honey at €1.57/kg, with significant triangulation of Chinese honey through Portugal. Valencia, Salamanca, and Seville were the top provinces for these imports. While Spain's spring honey harvest returned to normal levels after severe droughts, regions like the Valencian Community and Region of Murcia still faced poor harvests. Additionally, Rioja experienced an irregular harvest, yielding only 50% of the expected amount, with attention now turning to the upcoming fall harvest.
