Spain has seen a significant increase in its almond cultivation area, growing by 33.97% from 2011 to 2020, occupying 718,540 hectares. The country is working towards obtaining export authorization to China and promoting the 'Iberian almond' in the EU, with hopes for higher prices for producers and the eradication of bitter almonds. Despite a decrease in the hazelnut cultivation area, the first production estimate for the 2021 almond campaign is 109,364 tons, a 5.53% decrease from the previous year due to fungal diseases and frost. However, the potential for increased exports, especially in Europe, is high due to the growing demand for healthy products and Spain's sustainable almond production, which uses less water than other countries.
