The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food of Spain has imposed a restriction on the free-range of domestic birds throughout the country. This measure reinforces preventive actions against avian influenza in response to the increased risk of the spread of this highly contagious disease. Since July, 139 outbreaks of avian influenza have been registered in poultry farms in Europe. In Spain, there have been 14 outbreaks on farms, half of which were in Castilla y León, in addition to 53 in wild birds and 5 in captive birds. The following measures are in effect: The breeding of ducks and geese with other types of domestic birds is prohibited. It is forbidden to give water to domestic birds from water bodies accessible to wild birds unless it has been treated to ensure the inactivation of any avian influenza viruses.
