The FEPEX Walnut and Pecan Committee in Madrid has identified local phytosanitary restrictions as a key factor in placing the European nut industry at a competitive disadvantage, particularly against imports from the United States and Chile. These countries use prohibited EU active materials like cyanamide, which boosts productivity. As a result, Spain imported 28,997 tons of walnuts in 2023, primarily from the US and Chile, spending 725 million euros on walnut imports, with the "Nueces de España" brand being the quality differentiator. However, the sector faced challenges in 2022-2023 due to adverse weather conditions, leading to a 40% drop in production and issues with nut size and color. Additionally, the Committee highlighted the lack of information on pecan productions from autonomous communities and the Ministry of Agriculture, contrasting France's proactive promotion of the resilient pecan crop.
